Hey, friends!

I want to open with a straightforward confession: I struggled for longer than normal with how to begin this post. Usually, when I sit down and type, the words just begin to flow. Today, though, I felt as if I had an obstruction to my normal progress.

That obstruction? The unavoidable discussion of my absence from this blog. *sad face*

I checked – just to be sure – and, as I thought, it has been over one month since my last blog post! *double sad face*

Ready for another confession? I don’t even have a good excuse for going all ‘AWOL’ on y’all. Life has just been… life. BUSY. See? I told you: LAME excuse. (It IS playoff season… give me a break! Go PENS! Go CAVS!) The lack of free time hinders crafting, trying new recipes, and basically anything that creates media for an intriguing blog post. (Though we DID travel a bit… more on that to come!)

So, from the bottom of my heart, I apologize. (And I do have a few things a’ brewin’ – just sit tight!)

Anyway, enough with all those feelings and stuff. *shudder*

Today I wanted to share with you a trend that I am utterly OBSESSED with…

As do many, I love the feeling of waltzing out of a salon with fresh, smooth, colorful nails. Lately, I have been obsessed with gel manicures. Gel nail polish differs from regular polish as, after being “cured” under a UV or LED lamp, it hardens, providing intense shine and up to two or three weeks of flawless coverage, without chipping.

One of the downsides to gel manicures, though, is that they typically cost anywhere from $35 to $45 depending on the salon you choose.

My wallet says: “Ouch.”  What’s a girl to do?

Well, recently I began seeing in drug stores nail polish claiming to offer the same gel attributes mentioned above, without necessary salon-light exposure. These polishes were significantly cheaper (ranging anywhere from $2.00 to $12.00 per bottle/brand).

My initial thoughts? “Too good to be true…” *walks away* “…but, could it be?!” … *slowly walks back to the nail polish and grabs every bottle I can find*. I wanted to try every option as soon as I arrived home from the store!

Today, I bring the results to you!

Continue reading to see my thoughts on each polish, as I painted my nails and as time passed, to see which “gel” is really worth your time.

I know, I know; autumn doesn’t officially begin until September 22, but by mid-August, I’m tired of the heat, sun, and swimming. Not to mention, the back-to-school advertisements everywhere cause a creeping feeling in me that I cannot deny:

I have loved this season since I can remember. Summer is fun and all, but once you realize the best part about it was a vacation from school, and as an adult, there is no extended period of time off during your year, reality sets in. Summer, shlummer- amirite? SO much better are the cooler, breezy days, the magnificently colorful leaves, bon fires on a chilly night to cuddle up with your loved ones, apple cider at football games, and, especially, the fashion of autumn!

Let me reiterate: the fashion of fall (pauses while every girl swoons thinking of comfy flannels, new boots, and cute scarves). So that is what I want to talk about today. In all my autumnal-excitement, I’ve been dying to go shopping and amp up my wardrobe for the imminent season. Here are some items of inspiration that I’ve been dreaming of:

This past weekend, my husband and I traveled to New York City to do some touring and exploring with his family.

For me, as soon as a trip or vacation is booked, two vital aspects of travel revolve around my mind constantly until departure: what to do and what to wear at the destination. Our extended weekend itinerary was pretty much set, thanks to my mother-in-law’s love to travel and plan, so that left me with one major task: plan my outfits.

How to dress to tour New York City is an inquiry that, in itself, cannot be answered simply; it raises other questions such as, “how do I dress comfortably and stylishly at the same time?” I didn’t want my clothing choices to identify me in the crowds as a tourist, but walking upwards of 10 miles a day would just not be feasible in most of the shoes in my wardrobe. Since we had a lot packed into our schedule each day, I needed to look appropriate and respectable at places like the Metropolitan Museum of Art or nice restaurants for dinner, but I didn’t want to stand out as being overdressed while walking home through Central Park or Times Square. The forecasted weather was HOT, and sitting in a muggy subway and trudging down people-packed streets in the glaring sun also posed another topic of concern: how to dress comfortably, stylishly, and modestly while remaining cool and composed?

Here are two outfits I wore to New York City, and a few tips and ideas to put together your own perfect travel wardrobe!
