Aerobic & Full-Body Strength

Origin of Jazzercise:

Many people hear “Jazzercise” and think of the 1980’s. Perhaps you can visualize your mother in a neon leotard and leg warmers getting ready for her weekly class.

Judi Sheppard Missett created Jazzercise in 1969, which now boasts 8,300+ franchisees (basically their name for “instructors”) teaching 32,000+ classes each week around the world. Apparently, the average student sticks with classes for about seven years!

“THIS IS THE BEST WORKOUT”, or so claims article after article. New, flashy ways to “get fit quick” seem to pop up everywhere these days.

Techniques boasting to be the “best” overwhelm the internet so it can be confusing to know what to believe.

Even more, can there really be a “best” when dealing with a matter so subjective?

Let me elaborate. Some people flourish athletically in a class-type setting, where high energy levels and fun interactions abound. Conversely, the same conditions may overwhelm and distract another athlete. This could prevent him or her from achieving maximum workout potential.

Along with the warmer weather of summer comes shedding your layers and showing off those shoulders, arms, and tummies! If you’re anything like me, this is the hardest part of preparing for summer. What, you mean I can’t hide my bloated, carb-filled self inside of a thick, comfy hoodie anymore? PISH POSH. (Yeah, I don’t know.)

My wandering eyes followed their usual pattern while I was running on the treadmill this morning, eliciting thoughts such as:

  • How much is that person lifting?
  • How fast is my treadmill neighbor running? (It always feels like a competition…)
  • Any new headlines on one of the multiple channels broadcasting right now?
  • Hey, I think I know that person! *avoids eye contact because I look like a sweaty tomato*
  • Ugh, I wish I looked like that girl.

So on and so forth the dull musings continued until my eyes landed on two words boldly emblazoned on the wall above the TV screens:
